Forestry Mulching with a Mini Excavator: What the FMX28 Clears and What It Fits

Where a mini excavator mulcher earns its keep

A mini excavator mulcher turns a compact machine into a land-clearing tool. Mounted on a 3.5 to 10 ton excavator, the FMX28 grinds standing trees, brush, saplings, and stumps into mulch in a single pass, leaving the material on the ground as cover instead of hauling it off site.

The excavator’s reach is the advantage. It clears steep banks, ravines, creek and river edges, fence lines, and tight spots a skid steer or larger machine cannot safely get to. That makes it the tool of choice for right-of-way and roadside clearing, riverbank and drainage maintenance, selective forestry work, trail and lot clearing, and site prep in confined areas. Because a mini excavator is compact and low-impact, crews can work close to structures, on soft ground, and in residential settings where a full-size forestry machine is simply too big.

FMX28 or FMX36: matching the head to your machine

The FMX28 is optimised for 3.5 to 5 ton mini excavators, packing Fecon’s durability into a compact package that suits owner-operators and rental fleets. The FMX36 extends the range up through the 10 ton class, so there is a Bull Hog mulching head for the full mini and compact excavator range.

Running a heavier machine? Fecon builds Bull Hog excavator mulching heads for 8 to 15 ton, 12 to 20 ton, and 15 to 45 ton excavators. On a mini skid steer rather than an excavator, the Red Line mini skid brush cutter covers lighter clearing work.

Hydraulics, mounting, and what to check before you buy

Matching a mulching head to an excavator comes down to a few specifics. The most important is your machine’s auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure, because the Bull Hog’s variable displacement motor is tuned to run off it, balancing rotor speed against torque so the head keeps working in both light brush and heavier material.

Before you buy, check three things: your excavator’s weight class (3.5 to 10 tons for this head), its hydraulic flow and pressure (12 to 40 GPM, up to 4,000 PSI), and the mount that mates the head to your carrier. Fecon supplies optional mounts to fit your specific excavator.

No case drain? Not a problem. Many compact excavators do not have a case drain line, which rules out most mulching heads. The FMX is available with Fecon’s Two Hose System, a simplified hydraulic configuration that removes the case drain requirement entirely. Fewer hoses, faster installation, and it runs on machines that could not take a mulcher before. Send us your make, model, and hydraulic specs and we will confirm the right head, mount, and hydraulic setup.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The FMX28 is built for 3.5 to 10 ton mini and compact excavators. The FMX36 covers the upper end of that range. The key is matching the head to your machine’s weight class and auxiliary hydraulic flow. Send us your make, model, and flow and we will confirm the fit. If your machine is heavier than 10 tons, see our excavator mulching heads for 8 to 15 ton, 12 to 20 ton, and 15 to 45 ton excavators.

Many compact excavators do not have a case drain line, which rules out most mulching heads. Fecon’s Two Hose System solves it: a simplified hydraulic configuration that eliminates the case drain requirement, so the FMX runs on machines that could not take a mulcher before. Fewer hoses, simpler installation, same Fecon build. Send us your make and model and we will confirm the right hydraulic setup. Ask us about the motor options for the FMX28 for your specific machine and we will make sure you get a setup that runs on your excavator’s hydraulics.

The FMX28 mulches standing trees, brush, saplings, and stumps into mulch, with the exact capacity depending on your excavator’s power and flow. It is built for land clearing and vegetation management in tight, hard-to-reach areas rather than the largest standing timber, which suits the bigger excavator heads. For heavier standing timber, the larger Bull Hog excavator heads handle more material.

Yes. The excavator’s reach is exactly why this setup excels at roadsides, ravines, creek and riverbanks, and steep or soft ground a wheeled or tracked machine cannot safely work. It is one of the most common uses for a mini excavator mulcher.

It depends on the ground and the reach you need. A mini excavator mulcher works from a boom, so it reaches over banks, into ravines, along riverbanks, and up slopes without the machine having to drive there, which makes it the safer choice on steep or soft ground and around obstacles. A skid steer or track loader mulcher works at ground level and generally covers open, flat acreage faster. Many contractors run both. If you are clearing open land, look at the Bull Hog skid steer mulching heads; if you are working banks, ditches, and tight access, the excavator head is the tool.

Fecon supplies optional mounts that mate the Bull Hog head to your specific excavator, so the attachment fits your machine rather than the other way round. Because the right head, motor, and mount depend on your excavator’s weight class and hydraulics, the FMX28 is quoted per setup rather than sold at a fixed list price. Send us your make, model, hydraulic flow, and pressure and we will confirm the correct configuration and pricing.
